Man charged with theft, arson in domestic incident
A man has been arrested near Goulburn for allegedly stealing a car, attacking its owner, then burning a house down as part of a domestic-related incident.
The alleged rampage began on Tuesday morning, when a 32-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman woke in a Taralga home to allegedly find a 47-year-old man, who was known to them, stealing.
According to police, the woman screamed, and the older man ran from the house and, using keys obtained in the house, allegedly stole the 32-year-old man's ute which was parked outside. Police were called in to investigate.
Later in the day, the 32-year-old allegedly went to the older man's house to retrieve his vehicle. The two men got into a fight, and it is alleged the 32-year-old was assaulted with a pick axe handle or similar.
Police said the 32-year-old man then drove to Guineacor Road South to find his ute completely destroyed by fire.
The man then drove to his home in Mytleville to find it had also been burnt down.
Police arrested the 47-year-old man in Goulburn on Wednesday afternoon without incident.
He was taken to the local police station and charged with aggravated break, enter and steal, steal motor vehicle, two counts of malicious damage by fire, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, mid range drink driving and breach of AVO.
He has been refused bail to appear at the Goulburn Local Court tomorrow.
