Acting Station Sergeant Steven Booth said the man was riding his motorcycle north along La Perouse Street about 8.20pm and a white Hyundai i30 was travelling in the opposite direction.

"About 8.20 this evening police and emergency personnel were called to a collision between a car and a motorcycle here on La Perouse Street in Red Hill and a 43-year-old motorcyclist suffered critical injuries," he said.

"Despite a number of attempts at CPR and resuscitation from police and ambulance services, he unfortunately died at the scene."

It is understood police are investigating whether the man came off his motorbike before he was struck by the car, but Sergeant Booth said it was too early to say what happened in the crash.

"The ACT Policing Collision Investigation and Reconstruction team will be doing a full inquiry of the accident and will be making a report for the coroner," he said.

Police said in a statement that police officers were the first on the scene, and began CPR.

"ACT Fire and Rescue and ACT Ambulance arrived shortly after and continued the resuscitation effort but the man died at the scene," ACT Policing said in the statement.

"The 19-year-old driver of the white Hyundai is shaken but uninjured and assisting police with their enquiries."

The Pearce man is the 10th person to have died on ACT roads this year.

Earlier this month, Tim Smith-Brown was killed in a crash in Kambah after he was involved in a police chase.

The exact circumstances of that crash are still unknown. Police say they had terminated a high-speed pursuit of Mr Smith-Brown before he allegedly ran the red light and hit two other cars.

Mr Smith-Brown's pregnant girlfriend, Felicity Jessop, was a passenger and survived the carnage, albeit with serious injuries.

She was rushed to Canberra Hospital and has since given birth to a boy, who has been named after the father he was never able to meet.
