The man, 29, was travelling north on Coulter Drive, Evatt, in his Ford Falcon station wagon about 11.45pm.
Police said the man drove through the Ginninderra Drive intersection and collided with a traffic signal.
The car mounted a curb and became airborne for about 16 metres before the car landed in an earth bank and struck a tree.
The man was taken to hospital with injuries that were serious but not life threatening.
Police believe speed was a factor in the incident. They will look at whether alcohol or drugs were involved as part of their investigation.
