Police described the man's actions as "intimidating and deceptive' and a "callous act".

The man sat down next to the woman while she was playing the poker machines at the northside club at about 12 noon.

He talked to the woman for an hour until she became uncomfortable by his attention and moved away from him.

But the woman accidently left her purse in the coin payout slot as the man helped escort her from her chair.

CCTV footage shows the man waiting until staff members left the area before snatching the purse and leaving the club.

Gungahlin officer in charge, sergeant Rod Anderson said the theft was a callous act against a vulnerable community member.

"It's really the lowest of lows to target a vulnerable person like this, make them uncomfortable and flustered, and then steal from them," he said.

"His actions were intimidating and deceptive, all for a bit of quick cash. My message to him is this: 'try to make amends and turn yourself in to the nearest police station soon, because we will find you'."

The male offender is described as of Asian appearance and average height with black short hair. He was wearing a long blue jumper, blue jeans and dress shoes.

The woman contacted police later in the afternoon to report she had recovered her purse without any loss.
