On the same day, the woman had applied for an interim apprehended violence order against the man, but it had not yet been served on him by police.
The man faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.
The alleged incident occurred at Ainslie about 5.30pm on Friday. Police allege the man followed the woman and her friend in their car from Braddon to Ainslie before he attacked the car and threatened to set it alight, with her in it.
It was alleged the man approached the car after the woman's friend, who was driving the vehicle, stopped in a driveway and went into an Ainslie residence.
The woman had allegedly locked herself inside the vehicle with the windows slightly down.
Police allege the man spoke to the woman before he punched the passenger side window and kneed the car door. He then walked to the driver's side and tried to pull down the window.
The man then allegedly said, "I'm going to burn this car with you in it," to the woman.
The man moved to the front of the car and tried to open the bonnet before the woman's friend returned and they drove off. Police were called and the man was arrested.
The court heard the couple had been living together for about a year before the alleged incident. He has children with an ex-wife, and the court heard his relationship with the children was important to him.
Magistrate Campbell served the man with the interim domestic violence order in court. The man was bailed with conditions not to approach the woman, and he will reappear before the court in December.
No pleas were entered.
The alleged assault came on White Ribbon Day, an initiative designed to draw attention to violence against women.
