It was the 15-year-old girl's first party where she met the man who would later subject her to what prosecutors called "horrendous" psychological and physical abuse.

In a grisly "game", the Canberra man, who was 18 when he started a relationship with the girl in 2016, would throw a kitchen knife at her as she stood in the living room.
"You don't realise how sick in the head I am. I enjoy this," he once told her as he dressed a wound on her foot.
The man, who is nearly 20-years-old, appeared in the ACT Supreme Court on Friday where he was jailed for five years and nearly three months.
The sentence was for a series of violent and sexual offences - including rape, sexual assault, assault, sexual intercourse with a person under 16 and the possession of child exploitation material - against the girl and another woman, who was his ex-partner.
The man, who will serve at least two years and two months behind bars, did not react on hearing the sentence.
The man's crimes against the girl revealed a pattern of controlling and threatening behaviour over the course of his relationship, Justice David Mossop said as he delivered the man's sentence.
The man had also put on boxing gloves and punched the 15-year-old girl, and then kicked her when she fell to the ground.
He pointed a gun at her, and had sex with her when she knew she was underage, sometimes filming the act.
In a victim impact statement read by a prosecutor before the man was sentenced, the girl said she would have flashbacks of what happened.
She said she felt isolated and pushed her friends away to protect them. "I never want to go out anymore," she said.
"I don't do the 'normal' things like go to parties with my friends. The first time I met him was the first time I went to a party."
Her mother too, had a statement read to the court in which she described how she lost contact with the girl for days when she was with the man.
"The first time I let her go to a party was the night that they met. I have so much guilt and regret about this," she said.
The offences against the man's ex-partner happened in March last year after she agreed to visit him at his home.
They had sex and then he slapped the woman around her head after she told him she had seen another man while they were apart.
He pointed a gun the woman believed was real at her then placed it within reach and told the woman to have sex with him. "If it's not me it's the gun," he said.
The behaviour was controlling and manipulative, Justice Mossop said, noting the man had also told the woman he loved her.
He accepted a defence submission the man's offending was due to his immaturity, but only in part.
Defence counsel Richard Davies had earlier told the court the man had been denied a strong bond of family, as his father was abusive and his mother had left the country.
The man had self-reported ongoing health problems and the need for surgery as a result of using steroids.
Prosecutor Sara Gul described the man's offending as a "horrendous example" of pyschological abuse and physically cruel domestic violence.
She said he had been assessed at a high risk of sexual reoffending and displayed a "gross lack of remorse".
Accounting for time already spent in custody the man will be eligible for release in February 2020.
