The woman told police the 45-year-old man, who was on parole, had swung a baseball bat at her, shaken her and said he was going to kill her at her Dickson home around midnight on November 6, court documents tended on Saturday stated.

She fled to the unit next door but the man followed, entering the bathroom where the woman was hiding and punching her in the nose before stealing her phone, police allege.

The man faced seven charges in the ACT Magistrates Court, including an alleged assault on October 23 where the woman said the defendant pulled a knife he was hiding behind his back and stabbed her in the left arm and left side of her body while she lay in bed.

Court documents stated the woman was taken to Canberra Hospital and underwent surgery, with a 20-centimetre long wound left on her arm.

The man was arrested on Friday after police attended the Dickson unit about 1.20pm and found the windows closed and curtains fully drawn. The defendant, observed from a rear window trying to hide behind a couch, refused to open the door and police forced entry after hearing a female scream.

The documents said police heard the smashing of glass from within the bedroom and found the defendant lying on his side beneath the bedroom window.

Despite further attempts to evade police he was soon arrested. Police said a small amount of cannabis was found on the man's body in a clip seal bag, and a small knife was found near where the defendant was restrained on the ground.

The woman told police the man had been living with her "on and off" for several weeks at the time of the alleged assault on November 6.

The defendant's bail application on Saturday was opposed by the prosecutor. Magistrate Peter Dingwall, refusing bail, said the charges suggested the man had committed serious offences while on parole, and there was a likelihood he would commit further offences or not appear if released. The matter returns to court next month. No pleas were entered.
