The defendant, who was listed on court documents as Mandela Jon, appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday for property damage, assault and trespassing.
The court heard the charges stem from an incident at Northbourne Flats on Saturday, when the man was accused of kicking in the door of a unit before assaulting three men.
A police informant told the court the man had given his name as Mandela Jon upon his arrest.
But a fingerprint check returned matches to five different identities.
The officer told the court police were still working on identifying the man, but believed he operated under 10 aliases.
He said police suspected the man was wanted in NSW, where there were two outstanding warrants and bail conditions relating to an alleged armed robbery.
The court heard NSW police would seek extradition and were completing the paperwork.
The prosecution opposed bail, arguing the man was likely to reoffend, could interfere with witnesses, and may not reappear before the court.
But defence lawyer John Jasinski disputed the informant evidence regarding his client’s identity.
Mr Jasinski said the defendant lived with a relative and had been in the ACT for a period of time.
He argued a picture tendered in court of the man wanted in NSW did not match his client.
But Magistrate Bernadette Boss said the picture did match the accused.
Dr Boss refused bail, saying she was satisfied there was sufficient evidence the accused was wanted by NSW police.
The magistrate said the man would pose a risk of not reappearing if granted bail.
He was remanded to reappear later this month.
