A Eurobodalla Shire Council spokeswoman said about 30 native trees at Mogo Cemetery had been cut down and left where they fell.

She said the council believed the incident happened on Monday, before neighbours reported the vandalism early on Tuesday morning.

A council ranger who inspected the cemetery said he was stunned by the "malicious" attack.

"Every tree has been cut down," he said.

"We can't understand why someone would do this. It's just malicious destruction, and at a cemetery of all places."

The council spokeswoman said rangers had since installed video surveillance at the site, however they had acknowledged it was unlikely the culprit or culprits would return.

The cemetery is located about one kilometre south of Mogo village and home to about 100 graves. The earliest grave dates from 1858, while there are many Aboriginal people and local pioneering families buried at the site.

The council has called on anyone with information about the destruction of the trees to phone 4474 1000.
