Commuters from Cooma to Michelago and Tuggeranong are commenting on the dead animals. The problem increases during heavy traffic during the snow season.

ACT Parks Service rangers have said previously kangaroos are more vulnerable at the end of winter, because they are starving and looking for scarce nutrients on roadside verges.

A plea on Facebook says: "Can someone please remove the dead kangaroos on the highway between Calwell roundabout and Williamsdale. There is one part that has about 10 dead 'roos within 50 metres of each other. Not only is it sad and unsightly, but extremely dangerous when trying to avoid overtaking traffic as they are a hazard. They have been there for a few months now. Thank you."

An ACT spokesman said main arterial roads were regularly patrolled, and staff relied on reports through Access Canberra for rural and suburban roads. There was no policy to remove kangaroos to avoid them attracting eagles eager to feed on carrion.

"No, but our staff actively remove kangaroos from roadsides particularly in the urban area," the spokesman said.

"We would encourage members of the public to contact Access Canberra if there are safety issues associated with kangaroos."

A Transport Canberra and City Services spokeswoman said a feasibility study over the coming year would investigate the problem. A remedy could be nomination for black spot funding.

The Australian Government funded three projects on the Tuggeranong Parkway that included animal fencing under the black spot program. The spokeswoman did not say why this section of the Monaro Highway could not be fenced, in similar way as the Majura Parkway.

A NSW Roads and Maritime Services spokesman did not say how often requests were made to remove the dead animals from near the ACT border.

A spokesman said since July 1, 2016, 78 dead kangaroos have been removed from the Monaro Highway between Cooma and the ACT border.

"The highway is patrolled up to four times a week to ensure safety for road users due to the increase in traffic volumes during the snow season.

"Dead kangaroos reported by motorists or seen by Roads and Maritime Services' crews on regular patrols are removed from the road within four hours so they are not creating a hazard to motorists."

Kangaroos are the main victim in collisions with cars. Insurance Australia Group says in the ACT, there were 916 animal collisions in 2015, and kangaroos accounted for 825 of these collisions.

IAG says the average cost to repair a car following a collision with an animal is $4,300.
