Canberra experienced a net loss of 1244 residents in the 2013-14 year with 18,722 people leaving the territory, according to the latest ABS internal migration estimates.

It's a stark turnaround from seven years earlier when the city experienced a net jump of 2475 residents, with an extra 20,686 new people calling the capital home in 2006-2007.

In contrast, the nation's capital attracted 17,478 new residents a year ago; 3208 less than seven years earlier.

People in their prime have left the biggest dent with net losses of 728 Canberrans aged 25-44 and 770 people aged 45 to 64.

But the youngest and oldest are less likely to leave.

Older teens and young adults flocked to the capital with a net gain of 455 people aged 15 to 24 years old.

Canberra lost a net total of 90 children aged up to 14 years, and another 50 aged 65 years or older.

Seven years earlier it was a different story with Canberra attracting a lot more younger people, particularly working-aged residents.

The capital gained a net total of 444 Canberrans aged 14 years or younger in 2006-2007 year with 1410 Canberrans aged 15 to 24 years old and 1162 aged 25 to 44 years old.

Looking at regional movements, Gungahlin attracted the most young to middle-aged Canberrans in the 2013-14 year, netting gains of 398 children up to 14,781 young people aged 15 to 24 years old, and 1895 adults aged 25 to 44 years old.

Belconnen attracted the biggest net total of people aged 45 to 64 year olds (373) but lost the largest net portion of 25 to 44-year olds (1353).

Weston Creek dominated the grey army with a net gain of 40.

Tuggeranong sustained the most net losses among children (414), teens and young adults (601), middle-aged to older residents (475) and the territory's oldest residents (63).

Seven years earlier Belconnen gained more of Canberra's oldest and youngest Canberrans, attracting a net total of 531 children aged 14 years and younger and 117 aged over 65.

While Gungahlin still pulled in a lot of younger Canberrans – including 667 aged 15 to 24 years old and 927 aged 25 to 44 – it was Belconnen that became home to more children aged 14 years or younger with a net total of 531.

But the region still roped in the lowest net number of residents aged 25 to 44 years old with a drop of 57.

Tuggeranong still experienced some of the biggest drops of people in 2006-2007 with net losses of 352 children aged 14 years or younger, 268 adults aged 45 to 64, and 66 adults aged 65 years or more.

Weston Creek saw the biggest decline in adolescents the same year with a net loss of 183.

Fast forward suburb-by-suburb, Kambah was the biggest loser when it came to attracting existing Canberrans in the 2013-2014 year, the latest statistics reveal, with a net loss of 271 people.

While 1388 residents arrived in the suburb in the 2013-2014 year another 1659 people left.

The Gungahlin suburb of Crace reigned supreme with the biggest net gain of 774 Canberrans thanks to 956 new residents and the departure of just 182 people.

Bonner, Casey and Harrison were among the most booming suburbs, while Calwell, Chisholm, Wanniassa and, interestingly, the suburb of Gungahlin experienced some of the biggest migration losses.

Overall the Gungahlin region netted the most new Canberrans with a net gain of 2981.

Tuggeranong experienced the biggest net drop of 2232, followed by Belconnen – once the the second most attractive suburb for internal house-moving seven years ago – with a net loss of 1273.
