Animal collisions have increased by 30 per cent in the last calendar year according to new claims data from NRMA Insurance, up to 566 in 2012 compared to 435 in 2011.
Kangaroos equated for about 90 per cent of collisions in 2012, NRMA Insurance spokesperson Mariana Cidade said.
“In the ACT, we had 566 animal collisions for the 2012 calendar year,” she said.
“Kangaroos were 509 of those. They’re about 90 per cent.”
In 2011, kangaroos accounted for 386 of the 435 animal collision claims.
The new statistics have been issued as contractors continue the ACT Government's annual kangaroo cull.
Professional shooters have been contracted for the operation, which aims to cull 1244 kangaroos before the July 31 deadline.
A spokesman for Territory and Municipal Services said the government would not be providing updates during the cull.
“An announcement will be made at the conclusion of the cull as to how many kangaroos were killed,” he said.
“Due to the limited window available to conduct the operation it is unlikely the ACT Government will achieve the quota.”
Canberra and Belconnen topped the list of animal collision hotspots in the capital, according to the NRMA claims data.
The two suburbs recorded 76 and 30 reported incidents respectively, while Kambah rated as third worst at 24 collisions.
Tuggeranong and Woden reported 22 and 17 collisions respectively, while Hume and Hall both recorded 16 incidents. Fyshwick recorded 15 collisions, while Aranda and Wanniassa finished the top 10 at 14 recorded incidents each.
More to come.
