Data issued by Attorney-General Simon Corbell shows the most charges for dangerous and negligent driving in recent months were for offences in central Canberra and the city’s northern suburbs.

Government coffers reaped $72,838 in fines from drivers found to be engaging in dangerous or negligent driving from June 2013 until March this year.

Those fines included a small number of drivers caught doing burnouts.

In addition, the ACT Government raised millions from more than 90,000 parking tickets in the last financial year.

An additional 6954 tickets were withdrawn, and just 18 were dismissed in court.

The data is contained in answers to questions on notice from Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson and Liberal MLA Andrew Wall to Mr Corbell.

Since June 1 last year, 26 drivers were charged for offences including burnouts, racing, driving with intent to menace and negligent driving causing injury or death in Canberra’s northern suburbs.

Tuggeranong and Canberra’s southern suburbs, including Fyshwick, both had 17 drivers charged in the 10-month period.

In Belconnen, 13 drivers were charged, as well as seven in Gungahlin and four in Jerrabomberra.

Weston Creek and Woden had a total of 11 drivers charged.

The documents also reveal 33 cars were confiscated or impounded by ACT Policing in the same period.

One person failed to collect his or her car after 12 months, while the shortest impounding period was 23 days.

The data also shows 50 drivers were charged with furious, reckless and dangerous driving, and 13 were charged with negligent driving occasioning death or grievous bodily harm.

There was a decline in the number of fines issued for dangerous and negligent driving in the period.

In June 2013, 28 drivers in the ACT received fines but by February 2014 that number had fallen to 18.

For the first three weeks of March, just nine drivers were fined in those categories.

The highest monthly total raised from those fines was $10,465 in November 2013. The following month had the lowest yield in fines, at $4342.

Mr Hanson said he would seek a briefing on the information.

“The Canberra Liberals asked the questions in response to concerns raised by constituents and as part of ongoing policy development," he said.

"I have sought a meeting with the [chief parking officer] to discuss policing issues in the ACT including dangerous and negligent driving offences.”
