Police enacted road closures shortly after 10am on the suburban street in Hume and warned the public via social media to avoid the area.

The road near the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre and Green Shed was reopened at 12.15pm.

The incident was a "false alarm" a police spokeswoman said.

"What it ended up being was a novelty clock," she said. "The road was closed for more than an hour which caused some troubles for access to commercial properties, but now it's all clear."
