Adam Bowhay fled from Cooma on February 26.

Convicted murderer Adam Bowhay has been recaptured near Bredbo, NSW, after a member of the public spotted him south of the town.

The member of the public saw Bowhay on Billilingra Road at about 11.30am on Thursday morning and called the police.

Officers from Monaro Local Area Command arrested him without incident and took him to Cooma Police Station, and police said they expected to charge him later in the afternoon.

Earlier, ACT Policing sent two dog units to help search and were briefed by their NSW counterparts in case he crosses the border.

Bowhay absconded from a Cooma community work site on Tuesday.

A NSW police spokesman said the search for Bowhay had stopped on Wednesday night and resumed early in the morning.

Bowhay was convicted for the stabbing murder of Steven Jarvis at Casino in 1997, and is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 184cm tall, bald and clean shaven with tattoos on neck, upper arms and legs.

Queanbeyan police joined the search for Bowhay on Wednesday.
