The Australian Federal Police will be able to track the movement of suspects on Canberra's light rail system without a warrant in the same way investigators currently do with ACT buses.

Law enforcement agencies have been able to request data retained on MyWay cards since 2010, although have done so less than 70 times since the scheme was introduced.
And since the MyWay ticketing system will be used for Canberra's new light rail network, a Transport and City Services spokesman said the same policies will apply.
Police requested transport data from the ACT government 41 times from July 2014 to December 2016.
Twelve of those requests were granted, but no information was released the other 29 times.
This was because data was not found in the system to match the specifics requested, an Access Canberra spokesman said.
The requests represented a small fraction of the MyWay cards in use across the city but appear to have increased in frequency as use of the cards and the public transport system has grown.
There were 435,303 active MyWay cards as of December 2016, an increase of almost 18 per cent at the same time last year.
ACTION buses recorded an extra 200,000 passengers in the year to July.
MyWay cards can be bought online or from some newsagencies and convenience stores and can be recharged without linking the card to any personally identifying information.
However if users want to recharge the card online, they must provide their name, address and date of birth at a minimum.
ACT law requires records for the cards to be kept a minimum of seven years, while user data from deactivated MyWay cards is also held for the same period.
Requests for MyWay data are only accepted from the AFP and must be received in writing.
Disclosure requests must identify the detail of the legislation under which the disclosure is made, including the name of act and section.
Police agencies across Australia have dramatically increased their use of public transport data to track people in the past few years.
NSW authorities tried to gain access to Opal data 327 times in 2015 and were successful 96 times, The Guardian reported.
ACT Greens politician Shane Rattenbury had previously raised the idea of requiring warrants to request the data with former Attorney-General Simon Corbell
However Mr Rattenbury said he was now satisfied the ACT had the right checks and balances in place.
"The Greens do not support unfettered access to personal travel data, and are always concerned to ensure that the balance between personal privacy and public safety is right," Mr Rattenbury said.
"I spoke to the Attorney-General about this issue and was confident that we have the appropriate checks and balances here in the ACT.
"The police can only request information in certain circumstances, such as enforcing the criminal law, and there is an application process which requires them to detail the reasons for accessing the data."
