Restoration of a series of 17 artworks making up Reconciliation Place, at the heart of the parliamentary triangle, has been under way since March.

First opened in July 2002 after a national design competition, the monument covers the promenade linking the National Library and the High Court and includes works by Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artists.

Each work was chosen to celebrate the achievements, partnerships and connections of the nation's shared Reconciliation journey. They tell the stories of culture and personalities of Indigenous Australia, featuring commemoration of the Stolen Generations, the natural environment and community pioneers.

Restoration has seen each artwork returned to its original condition, varying from repairs to stonework, lettering and inscriptions to new glass panels and printing. Bronze plaques have been repolished and electrical and lighting repairs completed.

National Capital Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the completion of the work had been timed to coincide with NAIDOC Week celebrations. Their condition will be closely monitored in the future.

"Our contractor has worked very closely with us to understand how these pieces would have been designed," he said.

"We looked at each individually and 16 of the pieces required significant restoration work. They've all been brought back to their original condition, with the text, the images, materials and the surfaces being restored to their former glory."

He said the area deserved a higher profile among the capital's many visitors and tourists.

"It is a very compelling story. It is a story that is complementary to our growth as a society and therefore we continue to promote Reconciliation Place on our website... and through applications that help people plan their journey."

NAIDOC week, a national celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, continues until July 12.

A special festival day took place at the National Museum of Australia on Sunday, including performances by Warren H Williams, Alinta Barlow and hip-hop duo MajikHoney.

National Capital Authority education and outreach officer Roslyn Hull invited visitors and Canberrans to join a special walking tour of Reconciliation Place on Thursday.

Monthly tours led by volunteers also take place throughout the year.

"I think the work is incredibly important and it is a great credit to Ken Gibson, and the rest of the team who worked on this, that these artworks are so beautiful now.

"If I had every person in Canberra and every family visit Reconciliation Place, I'd still want more people to visit," she said.
