One Canberran observed the conflict on the morning of Anzac Day, tweeting "So much rage on the paths around the lake this morning between cyclists and people on foot. Calm your farms people, especially today".

Both locals and tourists have taken to cycling forums to express concerns, with blind corners, fast cyclists not sounding their bells, and minimal room causing near-miss collisions.

It's a view shared by Griffith resident Warwick Munro who said he'd seen close calls when cyclists whizzed past the narrow footpath on Bowen Place underneath the west side of Kings Avenue Bridge, facing towards Bowen Park.

"It can be disturbing and frightens people," he said.

"You can see where pedestrians walk off the path to get away from the cyclists."

Mr Munro, who stressed he was not against cycling, said he thought the path was dangerous and should be widened, or that the nearby gravel could be made into a separate lane for pedestrians.

Mother and son, Joanne and Jordan Jacquier from Harrison, said their dogs had been frightened by how close bikes must squeeze past to avoid hitting them.

"It's worse when we have the kids with us, who aren't as aware as cyclists," Ms Jacquier said.

"People who want to ride quite fast don't really stop for the kids, especially at this part."

A woman walking past with a pram had a similar concern, while another pedestrian said they usually avoided the area altogether for safety reasons.

But Keren Huggett from Rivett disagreed with the complaints, noting that Canberrans had it lucky compared to bigger cities with more congested roads.

"It has definitely been busy today, but it's really about being grateful for what we have here and that we can walk around the beautiful lake," she said.
