Wilderness Sports owner and veteran back country guide Bruce Easton said changes in routes by adventurers and a lack of monitoring undermined the basis for an online Smartraveller-type record.

"The police have tried to do some things similar, and it's pretty difficult, because in practice people change plans because of the weather and the snow," he said.

"I'm unsure – we've looked at this ourselves, as someone's who's closed later, we informally do keep a record of where customers intend to go."

The recommendation for an immediate investigation into a potential online trip register was made by Coroner Harriet Grahame last month as she ruled law student Prabh Srawn was probably dead, two years after he disappeared in the Kosciuszko National Park during blizzard conditions.

Adventurers must lodge a trip intention with proposed route details with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service only if they are collecting a personal locator beacon loaned for free with a $400 deposit. Details were kept by the service and police, but authorities did not monitor the person's safe return unless alerted to an overdue status. The main visitor centre, at Jindabyne, was open from 9am-4pm each day.

Mr Easton said easily accessible education material for hikers and back country visitors would be more practical than increased closures of the national park during difficult weather, as media had suggested.

A check whether adventurers had adequate gear with them – which now occurs when a trip intention form was lodged – could occur at the visitor centre, he said.

Maps and compasses (not relying on GPS or smartphones), appropriate clothing for warm and cooler days, appropriate eyewear and enough food and drink were essential. He supported the use of personal locator beacons, offered for free by the parks service and police and at cost by commercial providers like Wilderness Sports.

A spokeswoman for the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage said the parks service had begun reviews into what further measures could be taken to limit potential incidents like Mr Srawn's.

"As part of a review already underway, the NPWS will seriously consider the recommendations of the coroner to improve information available to our visitors, while actively encouraging people to be as well prepared as possible when visiting remote and rugged locations in parks," she said.

A service spokeswoman said people planning a multi-day or back country walk under any conditions should follow the Think before your TREK safety principles, which included keeping to their planned route.
