THE garage of a home in Chisholm was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services received a number of calls about 1 o'clock, with neighbours reporting hearing explosions from the property in Kiek Place.

The double-brick garage was engulfed in flames when ACT Fire and Rescue arrived.

Two neighbouring homes had been evacuated as a precaution.

Efforts to put out the fire were hampered by an overhanging power line, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and prevent its spread to nearby buildings.

It was believed no one was inside the garage when the fire started. The cause of the fire is unknown but will be investigated.
