The $150-million project will see the long out-of-date ACT Supreme Court building revamped and joined with the Magistrates and Children's Courts building to form a four-storey complex fronting Vernon Circle.

The major project is expected to create 350 jobs, and capacity for 22 court rooms, up from the current 17. Eighteen courtrooms will be immediately available upon the project's completion.

The government says the new building will meet the territory's needs for the next 50 years.

There were fears of significant disruptions to court proceedings during the construction of the complex, and suggestions that shipping containers could be used as pop-up style courtrooms in the interim.

But that option is no longer needed, the government says, as the consortium selected for the public-private partnership, the ACT's first, has found a way to avoid disruptions.

Attorney-General Simon Corbell said the consortium's proposal also avoids the use of any carpark space during the construction.

"Most importantly, we'll have a modern contemporary law courts building, one that has a very high level of environmental performance," he said.

"It will deliver a law courts building that's befitting of the national capital for the next 50 years."

Juris Partnership was announced as the government's private partner for the project on Friday morning.

It is made up of Laing O'Rourke, Macquarie Capital Group, Programmed Facility Management, and Lyons architects.

The new building will seek to resolve the constant IT issues plaguing the courts, and Mr Corbell said computer systems will be modernised and renewed regularly.

It will also include private rooms for lawyers to meet with clients, separate spaces for vulnerable witnesses and prosecutors, a mediation hub, and dedicated space for community and domestic violence services.

The pressure on space for juries in the ACT Supreme Court, which has caused problems on several occasions during the new blitz program for criminal trials, will also be relieved.

Five of the new courtrooms will accommodate juries, an increase on the three currently available.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the project was one of many contributing to urban renewal in the city.

He said the territory's first public-private partnership signified a new "path for procurement for major projects" in Canberra.

Mr Barr said public-private partnerships had been used successfully in other states and territories, allowing the ACT to learn from their experience.

"It sets a path now for the government to look at this as a procurement method where suitable," he said.

The ACT Law Society welcomed the announcement of the appointment of Juris Partnership, saying it was pleased to see progress on the project.

President Martin Hockridge said the improved technology, modern mediation services, jury management, and separation of parties would help the building meet "contemporary justice requirements".

"The Society looks forward to the commencement of the building works in 2016," Mr Hockridge said.
