ACT Health has funded a new demountable for Arcadia House in Bruce, with rehabilitation provider Directions learning this week ground works would begin before Christmas.

Directions chief executive Fiona Trevelyan said the extra building – freeing up space for another one or two beds – was a major boost as the rehabilitation provider managed an 80 per cent increase in demand for ice treatment across the past four years.

"It doesn't sound like much, but only one extra bed will mean that we can bring at least six or seven people into the program during the course of the year or that we can extend the detox period for people needing methamphetamine detox from one to two weeks," she said.

"If we can fit two beds into that room, we will be able to double those numbers."

The residential facility has had 10 beds throughout the year.

Ms Trevelyan said Directions had stopped admitting people for Arcadia House for this year, and any new people seeking help before Christmas would have a two-month wait on the list.

The demountable would be made up of a group room and attached counselling room and was expected to be operational from late March. A staff office would be converted into the extra bedroom.

The Arcadia enhancement project also involved the government-funded refurbishment of an existing kitchen.

"Directions is, however, appealing to the local community, both individuals and businesses, to contribute towards the cost of furnishing the demountable, commercial kitchen appliances, purchase of new beds and construction of the outdoor area," she said.

Total costs are expected to be about $50,000.

One in three people who accessed Arcadia House's residential program last year reported methamphetamine as their primary drug of concern, behind only alcohol.
