New Gungahlin suburb will house 5000 residents

Gungahlin is set to get another new suburb, with work on the 171-hectare Moncrieff slated for later this year.

The suburb of Moncrieff will accommodate about 5000 residents and is located in north Gungahlin.

Land Development Agency deputy director general Dan Stewart said the suburb would contain a shopping area, or group centre, that would service future suburbs.

''To provide the necessary scale to this concept a higher proportion of medium and higher density housing is proposed surrounding the commercial area of the group centre,'' Mr Stewart said.

Moncrieff is located 3.5kilometres from the Gungahlin Town Centre and more than  half of the suburb will be retained as open space.

He said they wanted to reduce reliance on cars in the suburb and promote cycling, walking and bus use.

The future development of Taylor would support a self-contained urban village concept with higher density residential and commercial uses in close proximity to the Moncrieff group centre.

''To further reinforce the character of the Group Centre it is proposed that Mirrabei Drive provides for an Inter-town public transport link with a terminus at the Moncrieff Group Centre,''  Mr Stewart said.

Moncrieff will be a mix of  residential, medium and higher density multi-unit developments, community facility sites, commercial zones and group centre, ultimately providing about 2125 dwelling sites.

The Residential Land Release Program has identified 500 dwelling sites to be released by a ballot for registered builders in June.

Work will start in the second half of 2014. The land will be developed in five construction packages proportionate with the land release targets, topography and servicing requirements.

  • More productive land and ancient paddock trees lost to urban sprawl. A victory for the builders and developers, a loss for all of us, other species, and the world. Why are Canberra urban planners so locked into a 1950s mindset?!
