The program came under the spotlight earlier this month after Canberra Liberal MLA Andrew Wall accused the peak union body of recruiting in ACT public schools.

Melrose High teacher Anna Russell, who watched a briefing of year 9 and 10 students at her Pearce school, said that couldn't be further from the truth.

"This is information we want kids to know because we're in this sheltered world at school, then bang, they're straight out on work experience, they're straight in a part-time job, and it's a completely different language and a lot of kids don't understand the importance of being on time but also at the same time the importance that employers show them respect," she said.

"The only time I heard the union mentioned was when [the industrial organiser] introduced herself and said where she was from, and at that stage you've still got 250 kids getting their backsides settled on cold floor. It was all about empowering young people."

UnionsACT established the schools program on the back of a survey that found seven out of 10 young people felt bullied or harassed at work.

Two early career apprentices were last year injured in high profile incidents which later led Skills Canberra to change its processes to better address the safety of school-based trainees.

Program coordinator Gabriela Falzon said the Education Directorate-approved initiative was aimed at students about to embark on work experience.

"It's a shame it was turned into a political football because the purpose of this program was to ensure students are educated about their rights and responsibilities at work," Ms Falzon said.

"We're not affiliated with a party, we're not pushing a message, it's a legal message."

Mr Wall questioned the ACT government on the program after receiving a complaint from a Campbell High parent concerned the union was pushing students to join.

This week he stuck by his concerns about the program and asked why, if the initiative wasn't politically motivated, safety messages couldn't be distributed by the Workplace Safety Commissioner.

"It could be seen as corruption to the extent that members of the union movement seek to control certain parliamentarians," he said, pointing to UnionsACT's push for Labor MLAs to disclose meetings with the Master Builders Association.

Education Minister Yvette Berry has previously defended the program and invited Mr Wall to attend a session.

Alfred Deakin High year 10 student Jack Dixon said he found the program helpful, and father Jim backed the initiative.

"From a parent's perspective it's exactly the sort of thing you hope kids do learn because they're not always going to either listen to their parents or ask their parents or their parents might not think about asking them about these sorts of things," Mr Dixon said.

"Having it happen in schools is great."

Union organisers have informally briefed students on workplace issues for about a decade.
