Hayden Tuck's plan was to lure the youth to his Scullin unit in 2011 to have him bashed by his three friends, who were hiding in his bathroom.
But the court heard the violence escalated past Tuck's expectations, with one of his friends producing a knife and repeatedly stabbing the victim, leaving him in a critical condition.
Tuck, 25, was sentenced on Wednesday for his role in planning the attack and luring the teenager to the house on the pretext of a party.
Tuck has spent 19 months and eight days in prison over the attack, which left the victim fighting for his life in hospital.
The court heard Tuck did not know his friend had a knife with him and did not know the victim would be stabbed.
But in sentencing the accused, Chief Justice Terence Higgins noted that "once you set a plan like this in motion, anything can happen".
The violence was described as a "cowardly" attack that caused "a great deal of pain and suffering" to the victim.
Chief Justice Higgins sentenced Tuck to three years in prison, taking into account time already served.
The rest of the sentence was suspended on condition of a good behaviour order.
