Luke Arganese and his friends bought their outfits, because hiring the costumes for the cheetah, Santa Claus and computer game characters was out of the question.
''Most of us enjoy a fun day in the sun, and it was for a good cause, '' Mr Arganese said.
Organiser Dan Murray expected more than 1300 people to take part, with participants ranging from five to 75.
The first stage of the elimination event covered 11 kilometres, before dropping down to just 100 metres in the fifth and final stage.
Mr Arganese's group didn't win but they were satisfied with their progress. ''The legs are a bit worse for wear,'' he said. ''It was a bit more difficult than I thought - it ended up being more of a cross-country venture.''
They rated the hills and the creek run the most difficult parts of the event. ''The funniest bit was the obstacle courses at the finish - there was a wall climb, a mud crawl and a rope climb.''
All proceeds will go to help army veterans suffering from physical or mental disability as a result of their service.
