The award was launched in 2012 in the ACT, and has been rolled out to NSW for the first time this year. Previously known as the Fred Hollows schools award, the initiative aims to keep Mr Hollows' vision of showing care and compassion to others alive.

The ACT winner will receive $2500 to give back to the Fred Hollows Foundation.

The money, donated by Thomas Sabo jewellery, will go towards restoring sight to blind children across the world.

The winner will be chosen by a panel of three, including founding director of the Fred Hollows Foundation, Gabi Hollows.

"The award is a fantastic opportunity to recognise students outside the sporting and academic realm," Ms Hollows said.

"I'll be looking for a young person who shows a genuine interest in the well-being of others and demonstrates that through acts of compassion. It doesn't matter how small those acts are, it is the intent of the young person that matters most."

Ms Hollows said year 6 students were singled out for the award as they're of an age where they begin to develop an understanding of the value of care and compassion.

Every student nominated for the Fred Hollow humanity award will be bestowed a certificate.
