BELCONNEN Way has a dark history of drivers who have been killed and injured along its stretch, so it will be of little surprise to locals that several hundred thousand dollars is being spent to fix one of its black spots.

Traffic light mast arms will be installed and some minor tweaks made this financial year to improve safety at the intersection of Belconnen Way and Coulter Drive at a cost of $388,000.
A Canberra Times analysis found there were 22 crashes there last year.
Fraser MP Andrew Leigh said the federal government had allocated more than $3.8 million to the 27 black spots across his electorate.
The project to fix the Belconnen Way-Coulter Drive intersection was recommended by the ACT black spots consultative committee, a panel of independent road-safety experts chaired by Dr Leigh.
''And the good thing about our black-spot program is that anyone can suggest an intersection or section of road they believe should be considered for a safety upgrade,'' Dr Leigh said.
Excluding smashes at intersections, there were 56 crashes on Belconnen Way last year, ACT government data show.
The worst intersections along Belconnen Way last year were where the road crossed with Benjamin Way (36), followed by its intersection with Eastern Valley Way and Bindubi Street (30).
There were 16 crashes at Belconnen Way's intersection with Kingsford Smith Drive and another 15 where it meets with Lathlain Street.
Earlier this year, an 84-year-old O'Connor man was killed in a two-car collision at Bruce near where Belconnen Way met Gungahlin Drive.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article said the intersection would get traffic lights. The existing traffic lights will be upgraded.
