More rail passengers will be forced to book tickets online as the NSW government looks to axe jobs at regional railway stations, including at the Kingston train station.

Under the proposal, 12 stations like Yass Junction would be left unstaffed and 19 others, such as Canberra and Goulburn, would operate with fewer staff.

The eight full-time positions at Canberra Station would be reduced to six, with four part-time positions added.

Low face-to-face ticket sales and passenger numbers is said to be behind the decision to remove staff from stations such as Parkes, Blayney, Broken Hill and Griffith.

But a NSW TrainLink spokesman said there would be no changes to train or coach service times as a result of the review.

He said the review, which began last month, would continue for three or four months and there would be no changes to the station during that time.

The announcement appears to confirm fears the staffing review would mean slashed full-time positions replaced with part-time or casual positions.

"Moving staff from an eight-hour job, down to just three hours part time will create a new working poor who won't be able to afford to only have one job and will be forced to try and get other work, or just go without," Rail, Tram and Bus Union secretary Alex Claassens said.

NSW TrainLink will also cease selling third-party tour and accommodation products on April 1.

A NSW TrainLink spokesperson told Fairfax Media unmanned stations such as Wellington in central west NSW will receive upgrade CCTV cameras and a customer help point.

Customers will still be able to buy regional tickets online from the NSW TrainLink website, via an accredited agent or over the phone on 132 232.

They can also pay for booked tickets at an Australia Post outlet.

But former Canberra resident Kristine Brown, 63, is not keen on the push to move ticket sales online.

"I don't believe it's safe … I know the banks say they will look after you but if you're a small person, they don't look after you quite so well," Ms Brown said.

"I think we're losing jobs, there are a lot of people who need to be employed and I don't understand why you spend millions of dollars on [unmanned] infrastructure when you could be employing a person who would do it better any way.

Jeanette Coombs, 65, who was seeing her daughter off at Kingston train station on Wednesday, said the move would disproportionately affect the elderly.

"I find that a lot of the people who use trains are older people," Ms Coombs said.

She said as she gets older, she doesn't like going online because she prefers human contact and booking online doesn't provide a seat-selection option.

"You go out there and they help you with your bags, they'll see you to your seat," she said.

"I prefer to go to the counter and talk to someone. I would hate to come in here and have it automated … to me it's a step down rather than a step up."
