The NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association's long-running campaign to implement standard patient-care ratios aims to stamp out the disparity between metropolitan and regional hospitals over the hours of care provided to patients.

Organiser Wayne Baxter said it was time the state government prioritised this issue and took steps to ensure that all NSW residents had equal access to care.

"Why should your postcode dictate the level of nursing care you receive?" he said. "We need to make sure the community knows how important this issue is and starts putting the pressure on local MPs to be accountable to their constituents."

NSWNMA Queanbeyan branch secretary Lynne Howell said Monaro MP John Barilaro had ignored the membership's calls for action.

She said the branch had collected 10,000 signatures on a petition and presented it to Mr Barilaro in June 2014 to table in State Parliament, but he had not tabled it.

"He has had the petition for several months now," she said. "To the best of my knowledge petitions across NSW were all tabled apart from the ones that were sent to John Barilaro."

Mr Barilaro, the member for Monaro, rejected claims that no action had been taken on the NSWNMA's petition request.

He said a delay had been caused as the initial petition was refused by the NSW clerk's office and had to be resubmitted by the local branch in a format that met submission guidelines.

The petition would be tabled at the next sitting of the NSW Legislative Assembly.

"I will always fight for our hard-working and caring nurses and get the best deal I can in the economic environment we are facing," he said.

Ms Howell said campaigners would persevere in their fight for universal care ratios and wanted more than just lip-service from elected representatives.

"Actions speak louder than words," she said. "I'd like to see Mr Barilaro sit down and really listen to nurses, step up to the mark and really support us."
