Oil spill on Vernon Circle
Firefighters are warning Canberrans to avoid Vernon Circle as emergency services workers tackle a paint spill.
The incident has backed up north-bound traffic on the CBD ring-road all the way to the Commonwealth Avenue bridge.
Police and firefighters are this evening working to mop up the spill, caused by a 44-gallon drum of oil-based paint falling off the back of a truck.
"ACT Fire and Rescue ask the public to try and avoid the area if at all possible," the Emergency Services Agency said in a statement.
An ACT Policing said at 6.50pm two north-bound lanes remained closed between Vernon Circle and Barry Drive, and would be for some time.
A few blocks away firefighters were earlier called to the Braddon Club on Cooyong Street in relation to an apparent electrical fault.
The club was evacuated about 5.20pm after staff detected a "smell of heat", ACT Fire and Rescue's Commander Leigh Curtis said.
The club has been given the all-clear, and the venue was expected to resume trading by 7pm.
