Police said a man, driving a black Subaru Impreza was travelling in a southerly direction along Streeton Drive, when his car collided with a silver Hyundai Getz being driven by an 88-year-old woman, as she turned onto Streeton Drive from Namatjira Drive.
ACT Ambulance attended the crash, which was reported at 1.45pm, but could not revive the elderly woman, who died at the scene.
The woman's family is yet to be identified and her death is the sixth on ACT roads this year.
The 33-year-old man driving the second vehicle was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Mark Steel said it was a timely reminder for drivers to be aware of weather and road conditions.
"Police will be speaking to the driver of the black Subaru to ascertain his version of events. It’s certainly too soon to speculate if speed was a factor, or the weather conditions, but it is a stark reminder for all Canberrans to drive to the conditions."
"We’re halfway through the month and now we’ve got a fatality on our roads," Sergeant Steel said.
"People have got to understand: we’re not out there revenue raising, we’re trying to change driver behaviour and trying to make our roads safer."
Streeton Drive remains closed, with some diversions in place.
Police have advised that roads will remain closed for several hours and motorists are being advised to avoid the area during their commute home on Tuesday evening.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
