Three Canberrans a day were caught speeding in 40km/h zones in 2014 on average, a figure which has left school groups despondent despite being a massive drop on previous years.

In the past school year, 827 traffic infringement notices and 545 cautions were issued in 40km/h zones around Canberra's schools, a 17 per cent drop on the previous year.

The Association of Parents and Friends of ACT Schools executive officer Julie Sengelman said while any drop was welcome, the number of Canberrans speeding around vulnerable children was still too high.
"Any decrease is a good sign for safety around schools but obviously we'd like to see a situation where there's nobody speeding through school zones," she said.
"It's quite scary and as an association it's an issue that often comes up in conversation for families.
"[They] are concerned about safety around schools, whether it be speeding cars or difficulty in being able to stop safely to pick up and drop off."
Ms Sengelman said the government and police should look at extending the 40km/h school zones into the holiday period while activities were still ongoing at campuses.
ACT Council of Parents & Citizens Associations spokeswoman Viv Pearce said many members were still dissatisfied at safety levels around schools.
"We need to keep working on this area," she said.
"I certainly wouldn't want to offer any criticism of [the police].
"These are complex problems because there are a lot of factors at play and there's no one solution,"
Ms Pearce said a survey of 1100 parents conducted by the council found road safety to still be a major issue with most ACT mothers and fathers.
"It came out loud and clear there are on a continual basis dangerous situations around our schools and we all, us as parents plus the government and the police, need to keep working at it," she said.
"Ultimately it's the safety of kids that we're talking about."
ACT Policing Sergeant Rod Anderson said patrols were held at every ACT school throughout term-time this year and would return in 2015.
"Children are our most vulnerable road users, which is why we urge drivers to be extra cautious around school zones," he said.
Police Minister Joy Burch said while it was encouraging the vast majority of drivers were obeying the law, the numbers should serve as a reminder for all motorists.
"It only takes one driver not paying proper attention to cause an accident and so I urge all drivers to slow down outside our schools next year," she said.
