Just 12 out of 87 public school communities have contacted Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT for assistance related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex students since January.

A number of Catholic and independent schools also asked for support.

The government school figure was revealed in the Education Directorate's annual report hearings on Tuesday, where Labor MLAs questioned bureaucrats on the upcoming Safe and Inclusive Schools initiative, which will replace the former Safe Schools.

The new resources aimed at supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex students, funded by the ACT government and developed by Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT, are scheduled to launch next year.

The initiative was the centre of controversy after misinformation spread about its role in ACT schools. Conservative Christians staged a protest outside the Legislative Assembly and the Canberra Liberals tabled a 1000-signature petition calling for an inquiry into the resources.

Education Minister Yvette Berry emphasised that Safe Schools and its upcoming ACT-specific replacement was not a suite of lessons nor a set program.

"This is not a sex education program," she said.

"It is about support for children to ensure that every child, regardless of who they are, is accepted and included into our school communities.

"Sometimes they need extra support, sometimes teachers need extra support and sometimes their friends need extra support, and that's what this program is about."

The impact the national same-sex marriage survey has had on students was also discussed on Tuesday.

Education Directorate Director-General Natalie Howson said she was unable to quantify how many students had sought support during the postal survey but said schools had been "proactive and positive".

"I'm very confident all our schools have been a lot more vigilant, if you like, about making sure that students that need support are proactively engaged in gaining that support," she said.
