Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson said he would also push for an investigation into the effectiveness of domestic violence orders and whether they are protecting vulnerable women.

"This is an area where the community would not want to see any political party engaging in political point-scoring," he said.

"This is too important an issue."

The move from the ACT opposition comes as debate about the domestic violence epidemic continues to rage, locally and nationally.

It has been driven by the killing of Tara Costigan, a Canberra mother of three, who allegedly died at the hands of her former partner Marcus Rappel, 40, just one day after turning to the court system for protection.

Ms Costigan was one of about 130,000 women who suffered violence from their current or former partner in the past 12 months alone.

Her death has seen a sharp spike in calls for support to the ACT's Domestic Violence Crisis Service, which is already struggling under a 40 per cent increase in total contacts in five years, and a near-doubling of crisis visits in two years.

But, against that backdrop of rising demand, ACT funding for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service has flatlined, while the Commonwealth is cutting funding from critical services like the Women's Legal Centre, Legal Aid, court interpretation, and local women's shelters and refuges.

The system's future will be shaped in a crucial Council of Australian Governments meeting in July that will look at a national domestic violence order scheme, better and more-integrated support for women, and stronger ways to target the perpetrator.

Mr Hanson said a roundtable should be held locally before the COAG meeting, bringing together the Domestic Violence Prevention Council, police, experts, support workers, sector leaders, and government.

It would also see victims speak directly or through written submissions about their experiences in seeking support.

The roundtable would be designed to ensure the ACT went into COAG with clear objectives, and would not simply be "a passenger", Mr Hanson said.

He said the ACT must look at whether resourcing for police, shelters, and domestic violence prevention agencies was adequate, and whether domestic violence orders were working as they should.

"If we are going to have a nation-leading response, and that's what I'm calling for, the government has bi-partisan support for their position, I think that sends a very strong message."

Last year, the ACT Government launched an investigation into the estimated 72 domestic violence-related deaths between 1988 and 2012.

Attorney-General Simon Corbell hopes that review will guide future reforms and show a "robust and independent picture" of the problem.

It also already has a Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Strategy, and worked with the Commonwealth on the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2010-2022.

Domestic Violence Prevention Council chairwoman Marcia Williams expressed support on Wednesday for the roundtable idea, but said it must use the sector's existing knowledge and build on it, rather than start again from scratch.

"I think these last two weeks have been an eye-opener for people," she said.

"We're a small jurisdiction, we should be able to get this right."

She said bipartisanship on the issue was welcome, as was COAG's plans for a national domestic violence order system and its focus on perpetrators.

Victims of Crime Commissioner John Hinchey said he would support a bipartisan approach and a roundtable discussion.

"Whether it results in any outcome will depend on the commitment of everyone involved to improve what we currently do," he said.
