The Royal National Agricultural Society, the organisers of the show, have approached the ACT government for financial help as the iconic family event's future becomes uncertain.

In a letter sent to members, RNCAS president Michael Kennedy said this year's annual general meeting would be delayed to allow further time for the audit process.

The ACT government is cautious about intervening, with a government spokesperson saying there were a few complicating factors, including the society's ongoing fraud investigation.

But a source told The Canberra Times the investigation wasn't the main thing affecting the society.

"They've got bigger problems than someone's hands in the till," the source said.

It follows a tumultuous period for the organisation, with a recent series of resignations, the ongoing fraud investigation and the iconic show running at a loss.

In a letter sent to members, RNCAS president Michael Kennedy said the RNCAS had received "practical support" from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, who run the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Mr Kennedy also said this year's annual general meeting would be delayed to allow further time for the audit.

"This includes the development of a 12 month strategy to better position the organisation as the premier agricultural event in our region," Mr Kennedy wrote.

"Part of this process involves working closely with the ACT government."

Mr Kennedy also wrote the RNCAS had received "practical support" from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, who run the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

A government spokesperson said there had been multiple meetings but no deal between the society and the ACT government's treasury.

"The situation is complicated," the spokesperson said.

The society, an entirely volunteer-run agricultural promotion organisation, runs another number of cultural events including the Canberra Home Show, the Regional Wine Show and the National Wine Show of Australia.

According to sources, the RNCAS relies on these shows to compensate for losses from the Royal Canberra Show.

In the letter to members, Mr Kennedy said these shows were looking "positive and will be successful shows".
