A spokesman for Attorney-General Simon Corbell said all parking meters using credit card payments were out of order on Tuesday, May 20, and motorists who were unable to process their ticket could effectively park for free.
However, the government is urging people to use the coin facilities on the machines, which are still working, instead.
The credit card facilities are reportedly down across the entire territory and the ACT government is working to fix the problem.
Older parking meters that use coins are still functional and can be used to purchase parking tickets. There is no official word on when the credit card service will be back to full operation.
Mr Corbell's spokesman said inspectors were working as usual, although fines would not be issued to anyone who was unable to process a ticket.
The spokesman said once the parking meters were working Canberrans would be expected to pay for parking and would receive fines if they did not.
In a statement, the Justice and Community Safety Directorate said "the fault appears to be a problem with the supplier's systems" and that "urgent work is being undertaken to ensure the machines are restored to normal as soon as possible".
The statement also said people who attempted to purchase a ticket but were unable to do so, are not required to return to their vehicle to purchase a ticket when the machines are restored to normal.
The Office of Regulatory Services has apologised for the inconvenience caused to drivers.
