A witness to a car fire which ignited nearby grass believes it could have quickly turned into a major blaze if not for the actions of passers-by.

The woman said the passing motorists had fire extinguishers in their cars and quickly put out nearby grass.
The car ignited near the Aspinall Street/Antill Street roundabout in Watson, close to paddocks with long, dry grass.
"It could have been an inferno if the people with the fire extinguishers hadn't acted so quickly," she said.
Commander Mike Cochrane from ACT Fire and Rescue said a pumper and crew from the Ainslie station also attended and put out the car fire, including by using foam.
He said the good work of all involved helped to prevent a bigger disaster.
"The fire certainly had the potential to take off," Commander Cochrane said.
"The passers-by obviously did a really good job in extinguishing the grass fire before it got away."
Commander Cochrane said it was not clear how the fire started.
