Bungendore Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Show Society president Marion Whalan said about 4000 people had poured through the showground gates to watch and compete in events from cooking and flower-arranging to the champion ram favourite.

Ms Whalan said there had been slightly fewer visitors to the show than last year, probably because Saturday evening's wild weather meant some people in the region had to stay home and clean up.

But the popular equestrian events drew a lot of competitors, and some of the more traditional crafts were experiencing a revival among young people. ''Knitting and crochet is becoming trendy again,'' she said.

This year was Ms Whalan's first show as president, and she said clowns and puppet shows had been introduced to entertain families.

''The dog high jump was a highlight. The winning dog jumped two metres, vertical, straight up,'' she said.

Bungendore local Helen Turner said the pet parade was the highlight of her day at the show.

Dogs, cats, guinea pigs, chickens and a frog were among the more than 30 pets vying for a prize.

She and six-year-old daughter Sophie entered their rescue dog, Garry, and he won second prize in the best-behaved category.

Holly McAdam and husband Richard Morrison entered their five-month-old puppy, Slim, in the pet parade, and came away with first prize for best behaved, second for best dog under six months and reserve champion overall.

Mrs McAdam said she was surprised when Slim took out the prize for behaviour, because he was a ''cheeky'' cattle dog, but the puppy had enjoyed the day out.

She and Mr Morrison moved to Bungendore from Canberra about six months ago and Mrs McAdam said they were loving the change of lifestyle.

''It's a really great community, and it's so close to Canberra but it's a different world,'' she said.

Ms Whalan said the show benefited from strong community and business support.
