Petition to restore Canberra's WIN anchors

Amy Dugan and Kerryn Johnston are WIN Canberra's new sports and news presenters.

Amy Dugan and Kerryn Johnston are WIN Canberra's new sports and news presenters.

An online petition has been launched calling on WIN Television to immediately reinstate Canberra-based news and sport anchors.

The petition, organised by the Tuggeranong Community Council, also asks WIN management to ''reverse its decision to downgrade the WIN TV local Canberra news service'' and ''give loyal WIN TV Canberra viewers an assurance their locally produced and presented news service will be retained''.

WIN News from Monday has been produced and presented in Wollongong, WIN Network CEO Andrew Lancaster maintaining the network had to undertake efficiencies to remain viable but that the quality of the live-to-air bulletin would not be compromised.

Tuggeranong Community Council secretary and former WIN journalist Darryl Johnston said the petition went live on Thursday night.

''The TCC is encouraging all Canberra residents to sign the petition and to circulate it to family and friends via email and online social media,'' he said.

Mr Johnston said despite WIN's assurances, there was concern in the Canberra community that the changes would have an impact on local news coverage.

''The TCC believes this is just the first step and eventually WIN TV will decide to no longer employ journalists in its Canberra newsroom at all,'' he said.

''It is concerning eventually news stories will be written by journalists in Wollongong or elsewhere and who have little or no knowledge of the national capital, do not have a feel for our city and do not have the Canberra news contacts to be able to initiate or generate stories themselves.''

The petition can be found here.

  • It is extremely disappointing that WIN has done this for no other reason that saving money. They may as well be reading it from Zimbabwe. I notice they are trying to appease people by running local pieces outside the news they are calling Canberra Stories. It was a training ground for some great people, Jessica Goode, Erin Molam, etc and the extremely professional Danielle Post amongst many others. Who is mentoring the young journalists now. The new team is o.k but it isn't as good. Every time the news comes on I feel like I'm down at the Sth Coast as they present the news there. By all reports the local links with charities will be greatly missed. I won't be bothering any more, I'll just watch the always excellent ABC.

    • VS. are you writing that from Canberra or Wollongong. I suggest you leave if it's that boring.tends to depend what you do with your time. If you mean nothing happens in terms of crime etc I'm glad of that.

  • Unfortunately online petitions never achieve anything. Just vote with your feet & turn off the so called new WIN "local" news. Ratings is what make or break television stations, and that's what they listen to. If enough people switch off WIN local news, perhaps they might reconsider bringing the broadcast back to Canberra.

    • The ultimate survey will be the results for the next survey period as well as advertising revenue. Let your remotes do the voting.

        • Why not have the Wollongong news presented from Canberra instead?
We have more than twice the population HERE.

        • The WIN network is based in Wollongong so they've got got the space, facilities and that's where the presenters are from...we have to remember its our presenters that left not theirs but I am in no way defending the moves by the WIN network, I think it's wrong but I also find it ironic, It's been mentioned before in comments on other articles, that WIN which is based in Wollongong and is the only network to produce a Canberra news bulletin where Prime and Southern cross both have their networks production base here but offer other areas their local news from Canberra

      • Good to see the TCC taking a stand for localism and jobs for journlalists in Canberra. As an old journo myself I know how the media moguls operate. They are more interested in money than they are in providing a quality news or current affairs service. This impacts on employment in the media, the time and effort working journalists can devote to stories and ultimatley the information they are disseminating to the public. This is one reason why we see little investigative journalism today and few quality current affairs programs.

        • Who honestly cares, They roported day old news that was reported on the news web sites that morning and throughout the day and none of it was if any real substace anyway. I already know about the crash on the GDE this and even if I didn't my life would be no better informed about issues that really matter now that you have reported it.
