The exhibition Portside will be shown by the Photography Room, at the Photospace Gallery, September 2-21
The images from Williams' ongoing series Wollongong Now include the emotionally raw picture of a young couple titled Shawnii and Jake 2013 which was selected as a finalist in the Head-On prize.
The image has an unvarnished appeal that Williams wanted to capture in his series documenting his home town.
"I have a teenage son and am constantly interested in how people choose to present themselves to the outside world and the factors that govern these choices - tradition, religion, brand-power, a perception of what's cool, a desire to differentiate or requirement to integrate; and so many more nuanced influences," he said.
Williams is a freelance documentary photographer and lecturer in photography and photojournalism at the University of Wollongong.
His work is being shown in Canberra with the support of the Australian National University's School of Art, in the Photospace Gallery on the first floor of the school in Ellery Crescent, Acton.
The Photography Room will present another exhibition later in the week, titled Americolor, by Dennis Church, an exploration of modern-day, urban America. It will be at the Kaori Gallery, Canberra City Framing, Hobart Place, Civic, September 5-27,
