Cartoonist for The Canberra Times David Pope has again been named Australia's best cartoonist, winning praise from peers as a ''phenomenon'' and the ''quintessential draftsman''.

Mr Pope took out the Gold Stanley Award for cartoonist of the year, as well as best caricaturist and best editorial political cartoonist, at the 28th Annual Stanley Awards in Newcastle on Saturday.
The Stanleys, hosted by the Australian Cartoonists' Association, recognise excellence in editorial cartoons and comic strips art.
Association president Jules Faber described Mr Pope as the ''perfect choice'' for the Gold Stanley.
''David is truly a phenomenon, he really is,'' Mr Faber said.
''He's a brilliant artist, he's got an incredible insight into politics … and overall he's just perfect, he's the perfect choice,'' he said.
The presenter of the ABC's Insiders segment Talking Pictures, Mike Bowers, won the Jim Russell Award for the greatest contribution to Australian cartooning.
Mr Faber said Mr Pope was very humble in accepting his awards.
''David also won in it in 2010, but he did not have the whole swag of awards that he did this time,'' he said. ''He's a very humble fellow is our Dave, and a wonderful draftsman, a great cartoonist.''
