Her body had been discovered in her home by a relative about 4pm.
Police have not yet determined the murder weapon, but believe a knife may have been used.
Initial examinations show the woman was stabbed, but the exact number of wounds will not be known until a post-mortem is conducted tomorrow.
Two men are assisting authorities with the investigation.
No charges had been laid and no arrests had been made by 2pm, and police couldn’t reveal the identity of the two men that are assisting them, nor their connection to the crime.
Criminal Investigations Detective Sergeant Phil Noble said police were still attempting to make contact with family overseas.
‘‘We’re still making inquiries with regards to the family of the deceased, and we’re attempting to notify the family of the death,’’ Mr Noble said.
Criminal Investigations Detectives, uniformed officers, and forensic teams had rushed to the scene after the discovery of the body yesterday afternoon.
A number of search warrants had been executed at different homes across the ACT last night.
Items were seized and will undergo forensic examination.
Police had remained at the house until roughly 5am this morning, according to neighbours.
Specialist Response and Security officers had arrived back at the scene about 9.30am.
They had began searching through neighbouring grassland and bins that lined the street.
Clothing was found dumped in a garbage bin, and forensic investigators were called for an examination later in the morning.
A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
