And their suspect, Benjamin Joshua Hausia, is now being held in relation to a string of burglaries dating back five years, allegedly netting goods worth more than $30,000.
The 24-year-old faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon after being picked up following an alleged altercation with security guards in Woden.
Hausia was formally charged in relation to six burglaries and associated thefts from late 2007.
During the break-ins - in Griffith, Weetangera, Ngunnawal, Dunlop and Holt - police allege Hausia took electronics, jewellery and other items.
Police also suspect he was involved in an aggravated burglary in Ngunnawal earlier this year in which one offender was dressed as a tradesman, with his face covered.
The individual was filmed on CCTV and images were subsequently issued to the media.
The court yesterday heard three independent witnesses had since come forward to identify Hausia as the man in the footage.
The victim's car keys and garage remote were also stolen, and in the days following the burglary police believe the same offenders returned and took their car.
Police also believe Hausia was involved in another incident after a stolen car was found torched and the defendant was identified as the last person in possession of the vehicle.
But he has yet to be charged in relation to these matters.
A warrant was issued for Hausia's arrest in November but police had been unable to locate him, despite visiting his last known address several times.
The man's lawyer said his client had been living in Dubbo but returned to the territory in late 2011 following the death of his mother and had been living at the family home.
Magistrate Karen Fryar refused bail, and the matter is due back in court later this month.
