A 25-year-old man who tried running from police after leaving a car involved in long pursuit through Canberra’s north, at speeds up to 125 km/h, has been caught and charged with numerous traffic offences.
About 7.45pm on Saturday police were patrolling in Lyneham when they attempted to intercept a car travelling in a suspicious manner.
Police activated their emergency lights and sirens indicating for the driver to stop. But the driver continued without stopping.
Police pursued the car through the suburbs of Lyneham, Watson, Ainslie and Dickson before the deployment of ‘stop sticks’ stopped the vehicle at the University of Canberra in Bruce.
The driver abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot, however police found him a short time later after a foot pursuit.
The pursuit lasted 12 minutes and reached a top speed of 125km/h.
The man was conveyed to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with numerous traffic-related offences including driving while disqualified.
He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday.
