ACT Policing will join forces with NSW Police for the nationally co-ordinated Operation Crossroads, which aims to reduce road trauma and will run from Thursday to Monday.

Double demerit points will be in place for speeding and seatbelt offences, with an extra point for other traffic offences, during the same period.

Traffic police will carry out high visibility patrols on major roads throughout the region and will set their sights on drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs, speeding, fatigue, distracted driving and seatbelt offences.

They're also set to focus on the Kings Highway as thousands of Canberrans head to the coast on the notorious stretch of road for the holiday break.

Drivers who aren't paying attention to the road and conditions will also be targeted.

There were two minor collisions but no deaths on ACT roads during the Easter long weekend last year.

However, 19 people lost their lives on Australian and New Zealand roads.

"This year police are challenging all pedestrians, drivers and motorcycle and bicycle riders to bear this number in mind before and during every journey this Easter, and bring the road toll down," an ACT Policing spokeswoman said.

Police handed out 258 traffic fines and 160 cautions during the 2014 Easter period.

The number of fines was up from 209 the previous year.

Officers also carried out 2464 breath tests, 21 of which tested positive to alcohol, and 61 roadside drug tests.

"The holiday period provides an opportunity for families and friends to come together," the spokeswoman said.

"It's far more important to arrive at your destination safely than to speed or ignore the road rules and end up spending your holidays in hospital."

The death of a male cyclist, 69, on Uriarra Road on Wednesday was the second road fatality in the ACT this year.
