For the month of October, burnouts, street racing, excessive speeding, tailgating, road rage and illegal trailbike riding will be on police radar, Traffic Operations Superintendent Ben Cartwright said – and he's calling on the community to help with the crackdown.

"I bet there's no one in Canberra who has not said 'jeez, I wished I was in a police car' when they have seen someone doing something reckless in front of them," Superintendent Cartwright said.

"Well you are in a police car as far as I'm concerned because you can contact us on 1800 333 000 or if it's that dangerous call us straight away on 131 444 and the police will respond. Even though we are out there in force and in numbers, we can't be everywhere all the time but you can."

It's not just bad behaviour the community is being asked to dial in – you can dob in defective cars too.

Access Canberra's Brett Swale said their vehicle inspectors randomly inspect more than 56,000 vehicles a year and can issue defect notices or vehicle infringement notices in the field.

"Quite often we'll find vehicles with smooth tyres that are too low, have very loud exhaust systems and dark tinted windows. We encourage people who find vehicles that are defective to call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 and they can provide vehicle details over the phone," Mr Swale said.

The campaign follows a month-long clampdown on distracted drivers.

Senior Constable Steve Barrett said police issued 146 traffic infringements to motorists using their mobile phones while driving.

"When we focused on this issue in June there were 107 detected so we're well up on last time we focused on this issue," he said.

"We'd still like to remind drivers to fight FOMO [fear of missing out] when they're driving. If they have to use their mobile phone we ask that they pull over; they need to obtain an approved hands-free device or simply not use it until they arrive at their destination."
