Daniel Ruspandini's profile was regularly updated, including with a picture, over a 23-day period earlier this year at a time he was locked up inside the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

Prisoners have limited access to computers, and no access to social media.

A court last week heard that Ruspandini allegedly sent a message to his ex-girlfriend that included a mobile phone number she could contact him on.

It is the third time in the past year evidence of prisoner's improper access to the internet inside the jail has gone public, after a prison fight was posted online, and revelations of an alleged drug ring operated via smuggled phones from within the prison.

Ruspandini has been behind bars on a number of charges, including assault, since mid-last year.

The online activity was revealed during an ACT Supreme Court sentence hearing for his ex-girlfriend last week, who pleaded guilty to committing perjury in an attempt to help him get bail.

The pair have since split and a number of the posts aimed at her were tendered to show the cycle of abuse the woman had been subjected to at the time she lied to the courts.

The court heard, during the sentence, that Ruspandini allegedly sent her emails from inside the jail that provided her with a mobile phone number she could use to call him on.

Two of the social media posts, tendered during the sentence hearing, make reference to his appeal, with one including a picture of legal documents accompanied by a message: "2000 pages of law to study in one day .... I hate you law courts!"

Another post said: "F--- this place ...... Someone help me escape this hell I miss the world so much".

Pictures of the posts also show Ruspandini had private messages waiting to be read.

An ACT Corrective Services spokeswoman declined to provide specific detail on Ruspandini's social media activity as investigations were ongoing.

But it is understood the updates stopped abruptly in February after the authorities became aware of the activity.

In August, a similar probe was ordered after a 34-second video clip of a prison fight inside a cell was posted on YouTube.

In November, Fairfax Media revealed police had smashed a sophisticated supply racket run from inside jail through smuggled mobile phones.

During one call intercepted by police, the alleged ring leader is said to have boasted that the syndicate had smuggled $20,000 worth of contraband into the prison one visit, and detailed how he sold phones to other inmates for $1500 each.

The spokeswoman said the jail enforced a number of security measures to keep out contraband, including CCTV surveillance, visitor and staff searches, and monitoring the prisoner phone system and other communications such as social media.

"ACTCS staff are required to check the grounds each morning before detainees are released from their cells," the spokeswoman said.

"The AMC perimeter is also patrolled to prevent contraband from entering the facility."

Jail security measures also include intelligence staff, officers, and the K-9 Unit working together to deter and intercept contraband before it enters the jail.

Inside, cells and cottages are regularly searched, and raids conducted when specific intelligence is received.

But, despite the strict regime, the spokeswoman admitted contraband continued to be smuggled into the jail.

Detainees found to be in possession of contraband could expect to be disciplined and, where the contraband related to serious illegal acts, have matters referred to ACT Policing, the spokeswoman said.

Internal discipline for those caught included the withdrawal of privileges, loss of access to contact visits or restricted visits.

They may also be subject to additional monitoring and searches.

The spokeswoman said the use of mobile phones continued to be an issue in prisons Australia-wide and corrective services organisations across the country were working together to address the issue.

A trial of mobile phone jammers Lithgow jail would be assessed before introducing the technology in the ACT, the spokeswoman said.

"ACT Corrective Services is also regularly monitoring technological and procedural developments to ascertain what other steps may be taken to prevent entry and or use of contraband phones in prisons," the spokeswoman said.
