Run by Woden Community Service, the Greyhound Transition Program involves offering support packages for people moving away from greyhound racing.

Among the support packages are short-term financial aid, free counselling and opportunities to retrain into a different industry.

The program also provides opportunities to rehome greyhounds.

Woden Community Service chief executive Chris Redmond said the program had been running since September under funding from the ACT government.

"The government wanted to put in place support mechanisms, and we suggested a case-management approach that would give individualised support to people who decided to transition from the industry," he said.

"We wanted to provide an assisted transition, given it's a fairly big deal for those who are experiencing it, and the decision [to ban the industry] was out of their control, so they might be feeling high and dry."

The chief executive said about a dozen people had already signed up to take part in the program, although he expected that number to increase in coming weeks.

"As the date [of the greyhound racing ban] looms larger, which isn't too far away, there may be an increase in the number of people taking part," he said.

While the government's transition program will be in effect until September, applications close on June 30.

Next Sunday will mark the last time greyhound racing will be held in Canberra as the ban will come into effect the following the day.

From April 30, people who are caught illegally racing greyhounds could be fined up to $15,000 or face a year behind bars.

Greyhound owners who want to continue racing over the border in NSW can continue to do so, but will need to apply for an annual greyhound racing controller licence.

The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club has a temporary licence to operate at the Goulburn track from May 6.

The club is also looking at building a training facility in Queanbeyan with the support of the NSW government.

Mr Redmond said while many in Canberra's greyhound industry would want to stay in some capacity, support was there for those who want to move into other areas.

"Part of our ethos is around assisting people in times of crisis," he said.

"It might include training and reskilling as well as subsidised places in work programs."

Rehoming greyhounds has been one of the significant tasks involved in the transition process.

Founder of the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club-affiliated Canberra Region Greyhound Connection Group, Martina Taliano, said after an initial surge in requests to rehome after moves to ban the greyhound racing industry were first flagged, requests have now remained steady.

"At one stage we were rehoming two to three greyhounds a week, now it's about one," she said.

"A lot of people in the industry are devastated by what has happened, and they're still holding onto a little bit of hope that the industry will be overturned."

Ms Taliano said she expects many working in the industry to go into NSW to compete.

"Most of the people who race in Canberra race in other places as well interstate such as Goulburn and Sydney," she said.
