The stopwork notice comes despite huge publicity in recent weeks about the ongoing danger of the 1049 Mr Fluffy houses in Canberra, a number of which have been found to contain remnant asbestos in the wall cavities and subfloor.
It also comes despite the government signalling laws that will require home owners to tell tradespeople if their home contained the asbestos insulation, and making asbestos training compulsory for anyone whose work touches on home building and renovations.
ACT Work Safety Commissioner Mark McCabe said he had been alerted by an asbestos assessor to the southside renovation, and ordered work to stop on the house on Thursday night.
He was still trying to get to the bottom of what the builder and home owner knew, but said the law required an asbestos management plan and there was none.
The extension had to date involved only external walls, so there was no impact on the residents, Mr McCabe said.
The government's new asbestos taskforce has asked anyone with concerns about Mr Fluffy homes to register their contact details online. It wants to hear from current and former residents and owners of Mr Fluffy houses, tradespeople or professionals. People who register are being contacted for details of their case. The taskforce is yet to set up its own webpage.
